Happy New Year: A Poem

How happy will it be

When the champagne wears off?

What exactly will you see

When you’re alone in your thoughts?

Are you being yourself?

Have you lost the shackles?

Is the act on the shelf?

Or does the show still crackle?

Those flames are old now

Something new must be kindled

Find it—you know how

In your neurons it is mingled

Not just a resolution

You can go even deeper

A personal revolution

A metaphorical leaper

Because now is the time

The earth will keep spinning

Circling the sun just fine

With or without your heart ticking

Go seize the day my dear

Fulfill that potential

Display what you hold near

To make growth exponential

Don’t fear your ambition

Embrace who you are

Life with your rendition

Is meant to go far

Only you know the script

So please, start writing

Don’t let the prose constrict

No need to keep fighting

Is this all too deep?

Mere literary ash?

Poetry is for the meek

These empty words are but trash

Just open more champagne

And go make some damn money

Who wants to hear you complain?

Happy New Year, honey

Love,

Your wife
