I Just Wrote a Bro-Country Song!

Bro-country.

It’s that style of country pop sung by dudes (bros), usually about women, beer, pickup trucks, guns, blue jeans, and dirt roads.

Have a quick listen.

It’s all well and good, but those who live in Connecticut are feeling left out.

That’s the state with the Puritan vibes, country clubs, fancy colleges, and superiority complex.

In other words, it’s not exactly bro-country material.

That is, until now.

The song is called “Backwoods Missouri,” written by my son and me and performed here by the younger and more mulleted of the two. The lyrics are included.

Verse 1

Mama said to go to boarding school

To make money, get an underground pool

I could drive an Audi SUV

Brag my whole life how I went Ivy

Get new digs in Fairfield County

Rake in some of that hedge fund bounty

Make my son go and play lacrosse

So he could peak in high school like a boss

Chorus

That’s when I went and bombed the SAT

My ass rejected from the Ivy League

It got so bad that the high-brow jury

Sent me to school in…backwoods Missouri

Backwoods Missouri

Verse 2

Mama said to join a country club

To make a few new rich-kid buds

Talk about them boats and Mercedes

Wear collared shirts and skin-tight khakis

Get a free ride to a place called Yale

Be prim and proper and act more pale

I said I’d go and try to learn to ski

Be like New England royalty

Chorus

That’s when I went and bombed the SAT

My ass rejected from the Ivy League

It got so bad that the high-brow jury

Sent me to school in…backwoods Missouri

Backwoods Missouri

Bridge

In Connecticut we had some fun

In every hundred days on maybe one

We test drove a few nice cars

I once went to a quaint little bar

Always tried to sound so important

Even if circumstances didn’t warrant

That’s how we rolled up in old C-T

Talkin’ ’bout cashflow and annuities

Chorus

That’s when I went and bombed the SAT

My ass rejected from the Ivy League

It got so bad that the high-brow jury

Sent me to school in…backwoods Missouri

Backwoods Missouri

Backwoods Missouri

Backwoods Missouri

Note: The older songwriter grew up in Connecticut and went to school in backwoods Missouri.

    1. Hahaha. No regrets at all—backwoods Missouri and Appalachia have been very kind to me!
